Fried Lice

Raise your hand if you enjoy good Chinese food from time to time.
::raises hand::
Well last night I decided it was a good night for take out at one of the best local Chinese food places in down town. I ordered a TON of food (like always), not on purpose but it just all sounds so good on the menu when you are hungry. I couldn't possibly eat ALL of what I ordered so I ate some today like you do with leftovers. Before class I grabbed a box of unopened rice and a spoon and walked my happy ass 7 blocks to class like I do every Monday and Wednesday. I get to class and snack while I am taking notes about the early works of Christian and Roman art and architecture. I get about 3/4 to the bottom of the box when I see an unknown object on the inside wall of the container when I notice it resembles something that I have recognized before but can't specify yet. I move the rice away from that area to get a better look when I see a set of wings, and then a few pairs of legs.... I don't want to make a scene in the middle of class so I silently dry heave in my chair (to myself) and place the box on the floor next to me. I have another hour to go before I can SCREAM about what else I could have possibly put into my mouth... Not that my stomach acid didn't correct the problem but it is the principle that the most popular Chinese place in the down town Savannah area has served me some rice with my bug. But what I thought after I was completely disgusted was that I wasn't going to throw out the box but to hang onto it and take it home to GUARANTEE a blog photo for my "Case of The Mondays" entry.

Dedicated to John....

You Know You're Addicted to Photoshop When...

You see the world with one eye and stock images with the other.

When asked what the primary colors are, answer "RGB"

You get the urge to 'fix' poor quality images.

You start teaching your significant other to use this "evil" program and in the space of one afternoon convince them it's at least only quasi-evil in the face of PSP.

You ramble about a breakthrough in the piece you're doing to people who have no idea in hell what you're talking about

You ponder the meaning of existence without layers.

You never leave the house without a digicam and notepad.

You drop something and your brain tells you automatically "Ctrl-Z! Ctrl-Z!".

When you realize it won't work, your brain tells you "Ctrl-Alt-Z! Ctrl-Alt-Z!"

You're getting dressed for something important and you look in the mirror and realize you would look so much better if you could just tweak the levels a little and apply a slight gaussian blur.

You stop on the street to rant about cheesey effects that should not be on professional posters.

You scream out fonts as they appear on TV.

You have dreams in "glowing edges"

You're standing by the ocean and wondering who used Ocean Ripple.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends who are addicted to Photoshop.

Inhale...Exhale...Inhale...Exhale

Today was my first panic attack in front of my teacher and in his office. This week and next week are midterm weeks. I have never had a problem that I couldn't handle when it comes to classes except for this quarter. I am currently taking 2 History classes and one studio course... One is "History of Graphic Design" (senior level class) and the other is "History of Western Art Survey 1" (freshmen entry level course). The freshmen course is kicking my ass. Took a test 2 weeks ago and received my grade on Monday. This grade has been plaguing me since Monday...3 days... No sleep, very little eating ( not that I'm not starving, I just can't stomach it), and an obsession with my history book has developed. I did FAR from great on it, so what do you do when you disagree with your grade? You go talk to your professor, make an appointment with them...Whatever. So I did. I met with Thomas today in his office at 5:30pm. All my answers are correct but he wanted more information than he was asking. He starts giving me tips for his class and when he refers to my specific test. He stops and says "well theres no need to keep bringing this up". So after disputing each question I start to feel it. My eyes are now welling up with water, my breathes begin to get heavier.... I quickly try to think of something other than my grade in his course... Nothing comes to mind. I try to cut him off to prevent a scene, but he is just one of those constant talkers, (the ones that talk your ears off even after you say that you get it) but he continues. The first tear drops and the breaths get faster and heavier....

::TEAR::TEAR::TEAR::TEAR::
::INHALE::EXHALE::INHALE::EXHALE::INHALE::EXHALE::

(He is still talking)

I say (in between my uncontrollable deep breathing) "Thanks for meeting with me, but I have to go now", and just get up and leave. I continue all the way to the car, to my house, into my room, and into the bathroom and I continue for another 35 minutes on the bathroom on the floor. The panic attacks are nothing new to me. I have them and I am ok with that, but I don't and have never had them in front of a professor. Embarrassing? Yes. It was. It still is. It will be until I get the hell of of this course. I have a problem dealing with things that I am not good at... I don't want to do them, I don't want to fix them, I want never again to mention that at one time I attempted it. I CANNOT handle failure. This is a person flaw and I know this. Getting past it is another issue.

I feel better after writing this.

Secret garden

Savannah is a really neat place. So many interesting secret places that you will walk by every day until you start to pay attention to your surroundings. This is a garden that I walk past every morning to class and I just looked through the gate and noticed a beautiful private garden area... So pretty.

To do...

Shooting a child...

"Finishing a piece of art is like shooting a child"

I heard this yesterday while in a conversation with a few friends and at the first glance I was mildly offend at the statement. But after thinking about it, the more I feel like it is the only way to explain the meaning behind it. Casually talking with a few friends about my feelings on my own work :

Person A: "I wasn't too happy with this piece, and I really don't want to make anything that I can't put into my portfolio."

Me: "Well you are one step ahead of me, I am rarely happy with anything that I make... Sure you have due dates and places where you have to stop and just accept the fact that it is what it is"

Person A: "They do in fact say that to the artist piece is never really done... Its a good thing"

Think about it... You create something, you give it a life of its own. You work the piece to its (possible) best potential. Then if you ever DECIDE that the specific piece of work is done then it just sorta ends the vibrancy and energy that you put into it. At that point it just becomes something else to hang on your wall, or put into a portfolio. They just loose their luster. I think I'm ok with things being a little unfinished.

She could be so frustrating sometimes. It's -- but she's a really, really good friend. I mean, loyal to a fault. She's -- she believes in me. My first date in six months....

My first date in six months with my running shoes. I had decided that I wanted an activity to get out of the house every once in awhile because cabin fever is upon me. "Why not exercise" I thought as the light bulb was flashing over my head. Its good "Heidi Time" and I'm getting off my computer ball for awhile. Needless to say it has indeed been awhile for me and the old running shoes. Three times around Forsyth Park and I can assure you my legs are going to be asking "What the hell were you thinking?" tomorrow morning.

homesick :(

Self Portrait Tuesday #2

This week I decided to post two images for SPT.

It is just a bon Jovi kinda day......

"You Give Love a Bad Name"

An angel's smile is what you sell
You promise me heaven, then put me through hell
Chains of love got a hold on me
When passion's a prison, you can't break free

You're a loaded gun
There's nowhere to run
No one can save me
The damage is done

Chorus:
Shot through the heart
And youre to blame
You give love a bad name
I play my part and you play your game
You give love a bad name
You give love a bad name

Paint your smile on your lips
Blood red nails on your fingertips
A school boy's dream, you act so shy
Your very first kiss was your first kiss goodbye

You're a loaded gun
There's nowhere to run
No one can save me
The damage is done

college kids with too much time on their hands....

I laughed so hard when I saw this... I want to make a video like this one...

http://www.collegehumor.com/movies/121764

Type face project

Having to make a new font using existing type faces. I can't think of a good layout/ color scheme... any ideas PLEASE let me know.

Bless us, O Lord for these children not know what they do.

Yesterday... I worked a double at the local Cracker Barrel on exit 94 of 95. My feet have never hurt so much in my life, considering I worked the day before also. "Debbie" was working in the station next to me. I start my speech about the Daily Dinner Feature:

"Today we have Chicken and Rice Starting at 11:00 a.m, we serve our made-from-scratch Chicken and Rice. Our chicken tenderloin simmered in a hearty chicken gravy served atop a bed of seasoned rice with two vegetables. "
(we have to say this to every table and try to not let them know that they indeed are just another table, just as we are one more server to deal with in their eyes)

I over hear the table behind me ask Debbie to say grace for them. She stops for a moment and then ::yells and falls to her knees while holding hands with her guests:: "Bless us, O Lord, for these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen."

At this point I have stopped mid-sentence of my cookie cutter speech and quit paying attention to my table, turned around and watched Debbie mock these peoples beliefs. But I think I was more appalled with the fact that they had asked her to say their blessing.

I am not anti religious, I have my own beliefs as I'm sure that you do too. What I had a problem with was making an uncomfortable obligation upon their server. If you say that you would rather not say their blessing, then I would assume that judgments would have been cast on Debbie, maybe not verbalized but I'm sure they would have been there if she had refused. It just bothered me, not to mention I had already been ignoring my table (the one I was standing in front of) for about 13-17 seconds. Made $5 off that table of two so it must not have been that bad for them.

Visual Vocabulary skills builder

The object of this assignment was to pick three of ten words given by professor and illustrate them with paper clips. No distorting, color changing, no drawing with image.... Basically illustrate the spirit of the word.

Champaign Wishes and lobster Dreams....

At a local seafood hot spot on Tybee Island is the modern day bug zapper for seafood lovers. People from all over Savannah know that for good seafood you come to the Crab Shack "Where the Elite Eat in their Bare Feet". So needless to say I have been lucky enough to enjoy lunch/ dinner here. I love the atmosphere of it. Outside patio, Light bulb strands, on the water, PILE of seafood, cold brew and sweet tea. A woman sitting at the table next to us was with her husband or much older brother. A cat had made its way onto a tree limb over the patio from the outside perimeter of the restaurant. It walked right up to the woman sitting a table over and she started to feed the cat from her monstrous seafood platter. A few minutes pass and she is still feeding this cat. I look back over and another cat has joined their party. This woman is feeding these cats in the middle of this restaurant. Who does she think she is? Michelle Pfeiffer? Tacky? I think so. So I was a sneaky snake and got a picture of her for the whole world to see!!! RESTAURANTS BEWARE! CAT CHARMER TRAVELS THE SOUTH.

My response to the situation:

But just in case you ever make it to sunny Savannah and you enjoy good seafood , do yourself a favor and go eat....

Self Portrait tuesdays.

I have decided that I am going to get more involved. I am going to participate in a weekly activity called "Self Portrait Tuesdays". Every tuesday I will post a self portrait and write a small description on why I chose that photograph. It will keep things interactive, at least for me.

Todays photo is pretty off the cuff. I have indeed been a slave to my Western Art History book. Since 1pm this afternoon I have done nothing but read and momorize images from the Cave paintings of Lascaux to the Egyptian Temple of Rameses II. I covered 15,000 years in the course of one day and 40 pages of an over priced paperback book. Kinda gives you a different perspective of how you spend your days.... one day they will all be forgotten in some history book that your great great great great grandchildren will have to spend $97 dollars to read and outline for the sake of a 15 minute test.

as requested: image from background..... know who it is?

Solo cup

Sitting in my 9am class waiting for my quirky little professor to walk in. I finished my 2nd project in my Vector for Designers class last week. I'm gonna be honest I am kinda crap with Illustrator, maybe I just like raster better. Photoshop just makes a whole lot more sense to me. I am getting the hang of it as we get more in depth but this is just another project or exercise to build a few skills needed for my field. We had to draw a solo cup with the pen tool. If you are familiar with the pen tools used in Illustrator then you know that this was a pain in the ass but I am satisfied with the end product.

Later today I will try and upload my vocabulary exercise.... I liked that one or three I should say.

Time to learn.

HomecomingZilla 2005

This weekend I spent in Atlanta. For what reason you ask? KK asked me to come and watch her be pretty while she does the whole homecoming thing. I naturally accept because we are starting to become friends, can you imagine that? Sisters becoming friends as the years go on?!?!

Well all went well and we got the traditional "dance pictures". I feel like these high school events are turning into such formal occations that they can be as much work as a wedding. KK's date, his mother had a professional photographer come and take pictures of them instead of breaking out her camera and enjoying that moment. She explained that she wanted the kids to remember this as perfectly as she could get it. Except for the fact that it was everything but perfect. KK's boyfriend was an hour and a half late picking her up.... Needless to say she ripped him a new one on the way to their dinner reservations. (I could hear her screaming at him and I was a car behind them). They didn't get pictures with the rest of their friends because they were so late. The dinner reservations were at 6:30pm on Saturday, They didn't end up getting their food until 8:30pm, almost 2 hours later and WITH reservations.

<---- (katie being HomecomingZilla We are just waiting for the boyfriend to get there. )

<--- Me, Baby brother Elliott, and KK

But needless to say KK was in shambles and crying her little asian eyes out. She got over it but I can't believe that lady hired a professional photographer for those pictures.
